As the first woman to be appointed as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, I indicated at the start of my term that I would place a strong emphasis on championing the voices of our women, girls, their families and their communities.

As the first woman to be appointed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, I began my term wanting to champion the needs and aspirations of First Nations women and girls.

In December 2017, I launched the multiyear Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women’s Voices) project. The occasion was marked, and the project officially given life, through the dance of a group of First Nations girls and young women from Redfern.

The First Nations Women’s Safety Policy Forum Outcomes Report was drafted by Alicia Filev, Jane Pedersen, June Oscar, Kimberley Hunter, and Sophie Spry, with contributions from external advisors mentioned in the acknowledgements.
